There have been a proposal at IETF to use AS112 as a sinkhole for
"special" TLDs such as .local or .home, which are responsible for some
part of the junk traffic at the root
<https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-bortzmeyer-dname-root/>
It got no support, partly because of the privacy issues: leaked
requests would go to a random, unknown, AS112 operator. (Note this is
also an argument against Paul Vixie's "root on AS112-like" proposal.)
