I'm sure it would lighten your load if you ensured that even negative 
replies from your servers can fit into UDP comfortably, ideally under 
1232 bytes [1].  Many big TLDs take great care to fit, and my favorite 
way would be algorithm 13 (ECDSA, e.g. in my .cz TLD) but there are 
others.  It's not so much about this particular problem you report, more 
like generally increasing robustness.
