Poor data model, that unfortunately went (by example) into an widely 
used protocol and was thus implemented by so many registries...

What you saw Melbourne IT doing is attempts to work around the data 
model. If they don't do this, an "service provider" domain is 
essentially irremovable. Both are of course bad.
