I'm playing devil's advocate here for a sec:

If we were exchanging sensitive operational information, like about 
ongoing abuse cases, then the restriction should absolutely be in place.

This is not what is happening on the mailing list, so I feel that point 
is not relevant. I suppose we should be glad about not needing opsec.
