As you may be aware, OARC and CAIDA have collaborated in working with
root server operators to do detailed annual capture of DNS queries to
root servers over a 48-hour period, in support of CAIDA's "Day in the
Life of the Internet" research project.
As well as being a repeat of previous years' successful efforts, this is
part of a wider effort to gather Internet measurement data from as many
sources as possible during this time-slot, so that it is potentially
available to researchers and operators as a snapshot for further studies.
It is planned to do the next of these 48-hour data capture exercises on
the 9th and 10 of January. One source of data that has not been
explicitly gathered in the past, but could be potentially be quite
valuable, is query traffic to AS112 authoritative servers.
The data gathering essentially involves running tcpdump on traffic to
the server, see:
http://www.caida.org/research/dns/dns-itr/resources/dnsroot_measurement_recommendations.xml
for more information.
Concerning legality and privacy issues, note that the act of gathering
this data does not imply any publication or disclosure of it at that
point. There are two potential complementary ways of making this data
available to the research community:
- If you are or wish to become and OARC member, and submit this data to
OARC, it can be made available to other OARC members under the OARC
Membership terms, on the same basis as the root server data.
- CAIDA also want to encourage everyone to index the data (& metadata)
gathered in their DatCat Data Catalog (see http://www.datcat.org). This
flags up the data's potential availability to researchers, subject to
any appropriate terms.
If you are able to help gather any relevant data as above and would like
to participate, or have any questions, please drop me a line by 3rd January.
Happy New Year,
Keith Mitchell
