Hello everyone,
I believe most of the people on this list have heard of ICANN's KINDNS
initiative (www.kindns.org). For those of you who haven't, here's the chance :)
KINDNS was launched last September, and nearly 1 year on, we (Raffaele Sommese
of U. Twente and myself) thought it'd be interesting to try and assess uptake
of KINDNS by operators. We'd also like to figure out what, if any, challenges
were encountered in the process. Even if you've already done the right things
as part of your usual engineering practices, and it was just a matter of
checking the right boxes, we'd like to hear from you, too!
We've put together a Google Form here: https://forms.gle/nuE4GSEY5i8YgqAo7
We'd appreciate it if you could spare 10-15 minutes of your time to go
through this. The plan is to present the results in a talk at the upcoming
IDS (ICANN DNS Symposium) taking place in Da Nang, Vietnam, on September 5th.
https://www.icann.org/ids
We'll close the survey on the 31st of August - but the earlier we get
responses, the more interesting the data will be.
Below is the abstract for the proposed talk (to be confirmed).
At any rate, we'll be posting results here, too.
"KINDNS is an ICANN initiative aimed at promoting voluntary operational
and security best current practices (BCPs) for authoritative and
recursive DNS operators. By compiling a comprehensive collection of BCPs
through community consultation and wide acceptance as beneficial for DNS
infrastructure operations, KINDNS seeks to establish a more robust and
reliable foundation for the global DNS ecosystem.
The extent to which operators actually integrate these BCPs into their
practices, and the effectiveness of such integration in enhancing the
overall resilience of the DNS infrastructure, remain subjects of ongoing
discussion. Presently, KINDNS relies on operators' self-registration and
self-assessment.
In this presentation, our focus is to explore the metrics and
measurements that can be employed to gauge the adoption and impact of
KINDNS's best practices on the stability and the security of the DNS
ecosystem. Additionally, we aim to outline the challenges inherent in
evaluating the impact of practices that may not be directly quantifiable
from an outsider perspective but can have a significant impact on DNS
operations."
Thanks!
Phil & Raffaele
