[dns-operations] whois no longer follows thin registry referral?

Am I on glue, or is the command line whois (debian, ubuntu) no longer
following the referral from the registry whois stub record out to the
full registrar record?

$ whois example.com
[snip]

The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .EDU domains and
Registrars.
[end of output]

I'm used to the command line client then trying to pull the full record
from the Registrar whois server in the case of com/net (and jobs I
guess), but that seems to not be happening anymore.

Did something change, possibly in anticipation of the coming switchover
to thick whois for these registries?
