The centerpiece of windows 2000 and newer is DNS, ask Stuart Kwan from MS,
he was product manager and he'll explain how just about every network
function in a windows network is now centered around dns. There are far more
windows dns servers than you ever imagined.

This is a tangent though and uninteresting as a way to solve the problem.
