Yes, half a billion is more than unreal.

We did have problems reaching some regions in india and africa.
Situation was almost tolerable. But when we played with routing
to enable anycast we lost them completely.

I know from the people working there that they did have interesting
results when querying the rootservers. Sometimes worked, sometimes
not. And you could not predict which server you would get.

Traceroutes to them changed too. At the moment they are completely
offline.

It is not problem of anycast, only ancast would not work for them
at all.
