Job Title: Linux Systems Engineer
Location: Remote
Job Type: Full-Time
Experience Level: Mid-Level (Minimum 4 years in production environments)

Who we are:

Quad9 is a Swiss-based non-profit organization that operates one of
the world's largest anycast recursive DNS platforms. Our mission is
to provide end users with robust, secure, private, and fast recursive
DNS service. We are a small but dedicated team of people who are
passionate about making the Internet a safer place for everyone.

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Linux Systems Engineer to
join our Operations team. The ideal candidate will have a strong
background in managing production systems, a solid understanding of
DNS protocols, and hands-on experience running servers at scale.

Key Responsibilities:

- Manage, monitor, and maintain production Linux systems to ensure high
  availability and performance.

- Implement, manage, and troubleshoot DNS services at scale.

- Develop and maintain shell or Python scripts to automate routine tasks
  and processes.

- Troubleshoot and resolve system-related issues, ensuring minimal
  downtime and impact.

- Perform regular system updates, patches, and security configurations.

- Document system configurations, processes, and procedures.

- Join on-call rotation for occasional firefighting.

Qualifications:

- Strong written and verbal communication skills (English.)

- Based in Europe or able to work a European time schedule, as well as
able to work with team members in different time zones.

- A solid understanding of the Linux operating system, with at least
  four years of operational experience.

- Hands-on experience with DNS protocols and related software.

- Familiarity with Internet infrastructure, including TCP/IP and routing
  protocols.

- Proven experience with Ansible for configuration management and
  automation.

- Proficient in writing Bash scripts for small automation tasks
(knowledge of Python is a plus)

- Experience with system performance metric collection and visualization
  tools (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana).

- Experience with OSS tools for systems management/deployment,
  observability, and monitoring.

- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

This position requires confidence in one’s skills and significant
experience in large-scale environments. We run a service that is as
“mission-critical” as it gets - without DNS, everything stops. What
makes this a great place to work is the knowledge that our service is
free and is designed to keep people from being victims of crime or
having their personal data exploited. The scale of the work is
planet-sized, and you’ll be working for an effort that actually makes a
difference, versus making a bottom line.

If you are passionate about our mission and meet the above
qualifications, we would love to hear from you!
