why, since you asked....
OpenDNS operates a recursive DNS service w/ optional features for
shortcuts, blocking domains based on criteria, etc. we get a lot of DNS
requests to serve, some of these are for requests that eventually go to
blackhole-[12].iana.org. we peer w/ ISC/F-Root in most of our locations,
so this traffic is already swallowed quickly.
we already operate our service on top of anycast (freebsd or linux +
quagga, peering with ciscos), adding seperate bgp/dns instances for
AS112 prefixes is the next step for us for reducing this traffic locally.
since we have experience running anycast systems, a decently connected
network, and are increasing our peering with other networks, announcing
these prefixes (w/ communities to make sure we don't draw too much our
way) is a good way for us to give back.
to that end, i joined the mailing list to keep up to speed w/ any
developments and announce our desire to contribute to the project.
